Celebrating the gift of parenting teens
Let’s be honest — some days, finding joy in parenting teenagers feels about as likely as finding a clean sock in their room. And yet, as both a child psychologist and Christian parent, I want to tell you something important: joy isn’t just possible during these years. It’s actually part of God’s plan for this season of parenting.
Remember when Jesus endured the cross? The Bible tells us He did it “for the joy set before Him.” Well, sometimes parenting teens feels like our own personal cross to bear — but there’s joy set before us too. We just have to know where to look, and how to hold onto it when the going gets tough.
From Survival Mode to Growth Vision
If you’re just trying to survive these years, you’re missing the blessing hidden in the chaos. Yes — blessing. Scripture reminds us that children are a heritage from the Lord, and that includes teenagers (even when we wonder if that particular verse needed an asterisk).
1. This is not just a phase to endure — it’s a season with purpose.
2. These challenges are real opportunities for growth, in them and in you.
3. God has a plan for this season, even when you can’t see it.
4. You were chosen for this specific child, at this specific time.
Celebrating the Small Victories
Joy often shows up in the smallest moments. Start noticing — and celebrating — these:
1. When your teen actually talks to you (in full sentences, not grunts)
2. Those rare moments when they make a good decision without prompting
3. Glimpses of the adult they’re quietly becoming
4. Any sign that your Christian values are sticking — even if they’re hiding it
5. Those precious moments when they let their guard down and just let you love them
These might seem small, but they are major victories in the teen years. Keep track of them. You’ll need these reminders on the hard days.
The Power of Intentional Gratitude
Try this simple daily practice — one that has made a real difference for the parents I work with:
1. Thank God for one positive thing about your teen, even if you have to dig deep.
2. Acknowledge one way you’ve seen them grow this week.
3. Celebrate one way God has helped you in your parenting lately.
4. Recall one moment of genuine connection between you.
Building Your Joy Foundation
Finding joy in parenting teens isn’t about feeling happy all the time — because let’s be honest, that’s not happening. It’s about building a foundation that can sustain you through the tough seasons.
1. Regular prayer — some days, it’s what gets you through.
2. Scripture meditation focused on God’s promises for you and your teen
3. A community of other Christian parents who truly understand
4. Self-care that keeps you full — you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Creating Joy-Filled Family Moments
“My teen barely wants to be in the same room as me — how am I supposed to create joy-filled moments?” The truth: you have to be intentional about it. And sometimes, you have to be just a little sneaky about it.
1. Create low-pressure opportunities for connection — drive together, watch something they love.
2. Find ways to laugh together; humor is one of the most powerful connectors.
3. Build traditions that honor their growing independence while keeping family bonds.
4. Support their interests, even the ones you don’t fully understand.
5. Make room for both correction and celebration — they need both from you.
The Bigger Picture
The joy we find in this season is about more than survival. Every hard conversation, every eye-roll endured, every boundary held with love — it all adds up to something far greater:
1. Building a legacy of faith that outlasts these years
2. Laying the foundation for a lifelong relationship with your child
3. Modeling for them how to find joy in every season, not just the easy ones
4. Showing them, by example, what it looks like to trust God in the hard things
Remember why this kid is in your life. You were trusted with a human being. And even though right now that human is sometimes acting like a hibernating bear with an attitude problem, God knew exactly what He was doing when He gave them to you.
Hold onto joy. Fight for it. Look for it in the small moments.
Father, help us to see the joy in this journey, even on the hardest days. Give us Your perspective on our teens and on this season. Help us to hold onto joy as our strength, knowing that You are working in ways we can’t always see. Thank You for trusting us with these precious lives, and help us to find joy in the privilege of pointing them toward You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
